Can real strategy games work on a touchscreen?

June 25, 2026 · Markus Bauer

I used to be a snob about strategy on phones. Fat fingers, tiny units, menus buried three taps deep. Some of that is still true, but the good designers have learned to work with the format instead of against it.

The games that succeed simplify inputs, not decisions. Colony Tide and Ember Vanguard both prove you can keep deep systems while making the actual taps clean. That's the trick: reduce fiddly micro-management, keep the meaningful choices.

Where it still struggles is anything needing rapid multi-unit control. Touch just isn't built for commanding twenty things at once. That's why turn-based and tower defence formats feel most at home here.

My take: pick strategy games designed for the phone, not ports fighting the screen. The difference in enjoyment is enormous.
